Bago Entry Requirements

Bago Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official Myanmar government sources and your country's travel advisory before traveling, as requirements frequently change.
Bago is a historic city in Myanmar (Burma) located approximately 80 kilometers northeast of Yangon. As Bago is part of Myanmar, travelers must comply with Myanmar's national entry requirements. Most foreign visitors require a visa to enter Myanmar, which can be obtained as an e-Visa, visa on arrival (for limited nationalities), or traditional visa through a Myanmar embassy or consulate. The primary international gateway is Yangon International Airport, from where travelers can reach Bago by road. Myanmar's immigration policies have undergone changes in recent years, and travelers should be aware that the political situation can affect entry requirements and travel advisories. All visitors must have a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay. Upon arrival, travelers will go through immigration and customs procedures at their port of entry (typically Yangon, Mandalay, or Nay Pyi Taw airports). It's essential to have all required documentation ready, including your visa approval, return tickets, and proof of accommodation. Before planning your trip to Bago, check your government's travel advisories for Myanmar, as some countries have issued warnings due to ongoing political and security concerns. Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance, as medical facilities in Bago are limited compared to major cities. Always verify current entry requirements with official Myanmar government sources or your nearest Myanmar embassy, as policies can change with little notice.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Myanmar requires most foreign nationals to obtain a visa before entry. Very few countries enjoy visa-free access, and the e-Visa system is the most convenient option for eligible tourists and business visitors.

Visa-Free Entry
14 days

Extremely limited visa-free access to Myanmar

Includes
Brunei Cambodia Indonesia Laos Philippines Thailand Vietnam (ASEAN members with specific conditions)

Visa-free entry is limited to certain ASEAN nationals and is subject to reciprocal agreements. Singapore nationals receive 30 days visa-free. Always verify current status as policies change frequently. Some exemptions may be suspended due to political situations.

Electronic Visa (e-Visa)
28 days for tourist visa (single entry), 70 days for business visa

Online visa application available for tourist and business purposes

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand Most EU countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, etc.) Japan South Korea India China Russia Switzerland Norway Brazil Argentina Mexico South Africa and over 100+ other eligible countries
How to Apply: Apply online at evisa.moip.gov.mm at least 3 business days before travel. Processing typically takes 3-5 business days. Upload passport photo and passport biographical page. Print the e-Visa approval letter to present upon arrival.
Cost: USD $50 for tourist e-Visa, USD $70 for business e-Visa (fees subject to change)

E-Visa is valid for 90 days from issue date and must be used within this period. Entry is permitted only through specific airports (Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw) and some land borders. Not valid for all entry points. Cannot be extended beyond 28 days for tourist visas.

Visa on Arrival
28 days

Limited availability at select international airports

How to Apply: Available only to nationals of specific countries and typically requires prior online application. Currently very limited and not recommended as primary option.

Visa on arrival service has been suspended and reinstated multiple times. Check current availability before travel. E-Visa is more reliable. If available, only at Yangon, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw international airports.

Embassy/Consulate Visa
28 days (tourist), can vary for other visa types

Traditional visa application through Myanmar diplomatic missions

How to Apply: Apply in person or by mail at nearest Myanmar embassy or consulate. Submit passport, application form, photos, and supporting documents. Processing takes 3-5 business days typically.

Required for nationalities not eligible for e-Visa, or for visa types not available online (long-term, diplomatic, official). Some nationalities may face restrictions or longer processing times. Recommended for those needing special visa categories or extensions.

Most international travelers arrive at Yangon International Airport and then travel overland to Bago. The immigration process follows Myanmar's standard procedures. Have all documents ready and be prepared for questioning about your travel plans.

1
Pre-arrival
Complete any required health declarations or arrival cards if provided on the flight. Have your e-Visa approval letter printed, passport, and accommodation details ready.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Print your e-Visa approval letter in color and keep multiple copies. Immigration will retain one copy.
Have your accommodation address in Bago written clearly in English. Immigration officers may ask for specific details.
Dress modestly and respectfully. Myanmar is a conservative country and first impressions matter at immigration.
Keep calm and polite with immigration officers. Answer questions directly and honestly.
Have USD cash in good condition (new, unmarked bills) for expenses. ATMs exist but aren't always reliable, and damaged USD notes may be rejected.
Take photos of all important documents (passport, visa, travel insurance) and store them in cloud storage for backup.
Exchange some currency at the airport if arriving late, as exchange facilities in Bago may have limited hours.
Be patient during peak arrival times. The immigration process can take 30-60 minutes or longer when multiple international flights arrive simultaneously.

Customs & Duty-Free

Myanmar customs regulations apply to all goods brought into the country. Travelers entering through Yangon airport before traveling to Bago must clear customs at their first point of entry. Be honest in your declarations, as penalties for smuggling or false declarations can be severe.

Currency
Up to USD 10,000 (or equivalent) without declaration. Amounts exceeding USD 10,000 must be declared on arrival.

Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended and may be required for visa approval. Medical facilities in Bago are basic, and serious conditions require evacuation to Yangon or Thailand. Ensure your policy covers Myanmar and includes repatriation. Carry proof of insurance and emergency contact numbers.

Current Health Requirements: Check current COVID-19 and other health requirements before travel, as these change frequently. As of late 2024, most COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, but requirements can be reinstated. Visit the Myanmar Ministry of Health website or contact your nearest Myanmar embassy for the latest health entry requirements. Malaria prophylaxis may be recommended depending on your itinerary and season of travel.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport and visa (e-Visa available for minors). If traveling with only one parent or without parents, carry notarized consent letters from non-accompanying parent(s) in English. Birth certificates may be requested. Ensure children's passports are valid for at least 6 months. Adoption papers should be carried if applicable. Myanmar authorities are vigilant about child protection.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Myanmar is complex and requires advance planning. You'll need: valid rabies vaccination certificate (at least 30 days but not more than 12 months old), health certificate from licensed veterinarian issued within 10 days of travel, import permit from Myanmar Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (apply weeks in advance), microchip identification. Pets must enter through Yangon International Airport. Quarantine may be required. Bago has limited veterinary services. Contact Myanmar embassy for current requirements as these change frequently.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas (28 days) can potentially be extended for an additional 14 days through the Immigration Office in Yangon. Apply at least one week before expiry. Extensions are not guaranteed and require valid reasons, passport photos, fees (approximately USD 30-50), and hotel documentation. For longer stays, consider applying for a business visa (70 days, extendable) or social visit visa if you have local sponsors. Overstaying your visa results in fines (USD 3 per day) and potential deportation or blacklisting. Always extend before expiry.

Business Travelers

Business visa holders need invitation letter from Myanmar company or organization, company registration in Myanmar, and purpose of visit documentation. Business e-Visa allows 70 days (single entry). Business activities must align with stated purpose. Working without proper work permit is illegal. Keep business documentation with you during travel.

Journalists and Media

Journalists must apply for special journalist visas and cannot enter on tourist visas. Professional camera equipment may be questioned. Contact Myanmar embassy well in advance. Unauthorized journalism activities can result in arrest and deportation. Myanmar has strict media regulations.

Dual Citizens

Myanmar does not recognize dual citizenship. If you have Myanmar heritage or previous citizenship, contact Myanmar embassy before travel. Use the same passport for entry and exit. Some dual nationals may face complications or be required to use Myanmar passport.
