Helpful Tips
Bago bus terminal sits beside Shwemawdaw Pagoda. Direct coaches roll to Yangon and Mandalay. Buy tickets inside the small office. Leave early.
Motorbike taxis swarm the clock tower roundabout. Haggle the fare before you swing a leg over. Agree in kyat. Shortely.
Shared taxis to Kyaiktiyo wait across from Bago railway station. They leave when full. Pay 7,000 kyat. Bring patience.
Common Scams to Avoid
At Bago's small bus and taxi stand near the old highway junction, drivers sometimes insist the 'airport' is a distant private airstrip and demand a premium fare. Clarify you want the military/utility strip 8 km east and agree on a fare before boarding.
Motorbike taxis waiting outside the main bus terminal quote a single inflated 'airport rate' to foreigners, even though the ride is short and locals pay much less. Ask your guest-house to call a trusted rider or walk 100 m to the main road and flag a regular bike.
A few freelance 'porters' at the junction insist on carrying small bags to shared taxis, then demand an excessive tip. Keep your luggage in sight and politely decline any unsolicited help.
